What Happens During Routine Transmission Service?

Transmission Fluid Exchange

The gears in both manual and automatic transmissions are cooled and lubricated with a special fluid, which breaks down over time. Without proper lubrication, the gears can wear down and produce tiny metal shavings, causing severe damage.

During a transmission service, the old fluid is drained, the plug is replaced, and the transmission is refilled to the correct level to ensure smooth performance.

Transmission Pan Clean Out

Dirt and debris accumulate in the transmission pan from normal use. This is filtered out during service. Vehicles with a filter will have it replaced, while the pan is cleaned and inspected for any damage.

The gasket between the transmission pan and the body will also be replaced to prevent leaks.

How Often Should My Transmission Be Serviced?

The frequency of service depends on your vehicle type. Manual transmissions usually require service every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Automatic transmissions can last longer, often between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.

Always refer to your owner’s manual for the best guidance.

Why Routine Maintenance Is Important

Routine maintenance prevents costly repairs. Even if your car shows no visible signs of wear, ensuring your transmission is in top shape can save you money and hassle in the long run.
